Congratulations to Joseph Cada, the new WSOP champ!

By Patrick Wallace - November 11th, 2009

Joseph Cada, WSOP 2009 winner
Shelby Township MI resident, Joseph Cada, emerged victorious this week, defeating a field of 6,494 entrants to win that most coveted of awards (apart from PTR’s shiny $10m profit badge of course) the WSOP Main Event champion bracelet, along with a staggering $8,546,435 in prize money. Winning the title at the age of just 21 makes Joseph Cada the youngest WSOP Main Event champ in history, and as he addressed the cheering crowd, teary eyed, he said “I’ve dreamed of winning this tournament, and to do it first year out of the gate is unbelievable”

After a grueling 2.5 hour heads-up match against the Maryland ‘logger’, Darvin Moon, he managed to overcome Moon’s aggressive play and win it all with his pocket 9’s holding up all in against Moon’s QJ suited. The pivotal hand heads up came when Moon reraised Cada all in with 7s8s on a board of 10c 5d 9h 10d, and after some deliberation, Cada made a great call with Jh9d, earning himself a commanding chip lead when the river drew a blank 7s.

It was 6 years ago that Joseph and his brother, Jerome, put their initial stake of $25 online, managing to grind it up to $250 before succumbing to tilt and losing the lot. Since then, he has come along way with some impressive wins in the online poker world going by the alias ‘jcada99′, and bagging such wins as FullTilt’s 750k GTD ($147,500) and Sunday Mulligans ($49,600) in 2008, then a 75k GTD turbo ($14,500) and runner up prize in a 15k super turbo ($7,100) in 2009. He also cashed twice in the WSOP events #13 and #34, event earning him $28,214 before winning the main event, although he still claims he mostly plays cash games.

Although Cada ground his bankroll up through the low limit heads up cash games on FullTilt, racking up $56,293 of profit, he has been seen playing exclusively at Pokerstars since making the final table of the WSOP Main Event, so it looks like there could be a new member of the ‘Team Pokerstars’ very soon. Since toughing it out at the Pokertstars cash tables, Pokertableratings ‘player search’ feature shows he has amassed a profit of $4,937 in around 9k hands, which at first glance seems like a great start, but a closer look shows he lost $3449 playing 8417 hands of NLH followed by an epic win of $8386 PLO over 269 hands. Of course, 9k hands is not a lot to go on but it will be interesting to see how his win rate pans out now that he has upped his stakes to the $25/$50, battling some of the toughest players in the world. At least we know his bankroll should be able to take a few swings now.

Whilst BenyamineX and 20buckspin have been donating to his bankroll, it looks like it has been shipped Samh133 and Deldar182’s way in some brutal short-handed sessions.
Cada took down some huge pots in his heads up games as his AdAc held up when 20buckspin semi-bluffed all in with a nut-flush draw on the turn, winning a pot worth $21,424. In the same game, Cada 3bet his AcJc to $500 preflop, and was met with a cracking flop of 9c Ks 10c, a bet of $650 by Cada and a call saw his nut-flush hit on the turn as the 8c fell, and then it was just a case of reeling 20buckspin in to take down a $12,100 pot.

On the flip side, Cada lost his biggest pot when his As9d flopped a two pair but lost to an unfortunate runner-runner flush at the hands of 20buckspin. The flop couldn’t have been better bringing Ad 9s 4h, 20buckspin called the flop reraise to $700, looking like he planned to semi-bluff the turn all along. It brought a Qh along with a raising war which set 20buckspin all in, the river brought a 5h, bad beating Cada out of a $23,092 pot.

Everyone always asks the same question about the latest champ, how much of it was skill? Jamie Gold and Peter Eastgate had the grilling, and I doubt it will be any different for Joseph Cada as he is rumoured to be appearing in the new season of ‘High Stakes Poker’ on GSN, but with his track record pre WSOP, it looks like this years champ can hold his own.

Awesome; I saw very little of the Main Event this year but I was quickly impressed with Cada and his entire poker demeanor. Congrats dude now put some of that gwap away and keep killin’ em!

Cada is a luckbox, he won 3 coin flips and sucked out twice during the final table, odds to do this are 1/5 X 1/5 X 1/2 X 1/2 X 1/2 = 1/200. Everyone know that the bracelet belongs to saout

  3. Martin_one avatar Martin_one says:

saout is the champ….cada was the tablefish!
i have never seen an idiot like Cada. he is just a luckbox.

4 what I saw on ESPN… they were 8 great players & a guy having fun with chips (Moon).. 2 many suckouts made it look like an “unfair” day of poker… Cada is the Champ like it or not although he was defenitly not the best player this time.. my “Deserved to win” rankings on the 2009 ME Final Table: 1. SAOUT 2. Schulman 3. Ivey 4. Beggs 5. Buckman 6. Schafel 7. CADA 8. Akenhead 9. Moon

Saout is the 2009 WSOP champ. Cada should have been out and celebrating with his faggot friends.

  6. UberDonk avatar UberDonk says:

Probably the WORST final table I’ve ever seen. Cada had some unbelievable luck, as did Moon. The two worst players finished 1/2…sigh.
Saout should have taken it all down – he played great.

What a bunch of jealous bastards. The best player rarely wins. He won major ups to him and if hes that bad of player it will show in the future.

like it or not poker has a lot of luck. If it did not, so few people would play it , only a handful would make any money. Look at chess. Only the very elite 20 or 30 make any money at all. Its a game of pure skill.
Poker success is judged by how much you have won. You can claim to be the best, but if you have not won a lot, no one cares much what you say.
Whine all you want. Joseph Cada has won over 8 million. Thats a lot of proof and a huge slap in the mouth to all you whiners. Why? Hes not listening! Too busy spending his millions while you sit in your dumpy little home crying.
