Online Pros: Strengths and Weaknesses

By Patrick Wallace - December 16th, 2009

weak linksThe past few months have been packed with high stakes action at the virtual felt with millions being won and lost, but have the pros been playing their strengths or giving into their weaknesses? Hopefully this article will answer this questions as well as paving the way to a cracking game of top trumps.

Isildur1
Strengths: $500/$1000 NLH SH
Weaknesses: PLO HU and table selection

Isildur1 has played over 66k hands of PLO HU showing a loss of $5m compared to just 14.7k hands of NLH SH that shows a profit of $2.5m. When coupled with the fact he predominantly squares off against Fulltilt’s red pros, this suggests he hasn’t been putting his best foot forward throughout his games.

Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan
Strengths: $500/$1000 NLH SH
Weaknesses: Isildur1 and any hand played in 2009

Durrrr’s hyper aggressive style can make any pro look a fool in any game, especially playing nose bleed NLH SH where he is up $5.7m. However this year has been terrible for the young poker prodigy, showing losses in excess of $6m for 2009 on Fulltilt, mostly from his unlucky run with Isildur1 that cost him $4.3m.

Nanonoko
Strengths: $2/4 – $10/$20 NLH SH
Weaknesses: N/A

This multi-tabling maniac ground nearly a $1m playing low limit NLH SH, only showing very minor losses in very few games. Nanonoko always plays his best game and is making a healthy living from it.

Phil Ivey
Strengths: HU
Weaknesses NLH SH

Phil is up an impressive $4.85m in his HU games but stuck for over $1m in NLH SH. Unfortunately, he has played more hands in short handed games, but this is probably due to his opponents having to be raving lunatics to play him heads up.

Patrik Antonius
Strengths: PLO HU
Weaknesses: NLH SH

A surprising result as Patrik ground his bankroll specialising in the NLH SH games. His PLO HU games have bagged him $1.76m compared to his losses of $2.77m in his NLH SH games.

Brian Hastings
Strengths: PLO HU and one-hit wonders
Weaknesses: $500/$1000 NLH SH

Brian is playing more hands of HU than SH and is definitely finding the right games. He is up $3.6m in PLO HU and down $1.34m in the nose bleed NLH SH, and his best wins have come from the high stakes newbies as he sank Martonas for $600k and Isildur1 for a whopping $3.6m.

Ilari ‘ziigmund’ Sahamies
Strengths: PLO SH
Weaknesses: Every other game

Ziigmund’s PLO SH stats are impressive, beating the tables for $740k, however he seems to be down $2m from all the other games. Considering he has only played 1.5k hands of PLO SH of the 33k hands tracked, Ziigmund’s table and game selection leave a lot to be desired.

Cole South
Strengths: PLO HU
Weaknesses: PLO SH

Cole’s biggest swings have definitely been in PLO where he shows a profit of $1.4m HU, but a loss of nearly $1.4m in SH games. He’s only slightly favouring the SH games, but how much action can a Fulltilt red pro get in HU games?

Phil ‘OMGClayAiken’ Galfond
Strengths: NLH SH
Weaknesses: PLO SH

I Was quite tempted to put N/A as for his ‘weakness’ because he quite clearly has an edge in virtually every game he plays. Hat’s off to Urindanger for having a $400k profit against Phil Galfond.

Di ‘Urindanger’ Dang
Strengths: NLH SH
Weaknesses: $100/$200 NLH HU

You certainly are in danger if you sit down with this guy, being one of the most solid players on Fulltilt and barely having a weak game. I’m sure his loss in $100/$200 NLH HU was just variance but I had to put something.

It’s kinda silly to put Isildur’s strength as NLHE SH, when 99% of his “6 max hands” were actually heads’up on a 6 max table ;/

This was a collection of the pros profits at different tables using the available results, not meant as a literal assessment of the pros games but of what the stats suggest so far. Apologies if this didn’t come across in the article. Good luck at the tables all :)
