PTR broken!? Nope.

By dameon - December 2nd, 2009

Hey guys,

We’ve been working on the database nodes the last few days and have had to bring them online and offline while they are undergoing routine maintenance.

Nothing is broken, yes we realize you might be getting partial results when you search for someone right now. This is basically just random based on whether or not data was cached when we had some database nodes offline. This will correct itself over time.

Thanks!
Dameon

Try to do the with a copy of the data.
When the data is incomplete all the time because of “database maintenance” it’s more than a little upsetting.

The data isn’t incomplete “all the time”, the last 3 days we’ve been doing some database maintenance. Also, please read up on our commenting policy at http://www.pokertableratings.com/commenting.php

  3. Engin80 avatar Engin80 says:

It’s important to work with a copy of the data, not with the productive data.
    That’s very common knowledge.
    Thank you for correcting/censoring,
    Engin80

  4. dameon avatar dameon says:

I don’t know how much common knowledge there is available when you’re talking about 30 TB databases :)

  5. Engin80 avatar Engin80 says:

Yeah, I’m working with comparable systems, you need two data server groups.
    Think about it.

  6. dameon avatar dameon says:

This is a free website, we don’t have a budget that would allow us to have two copies of the data – and regardless production nodes still will need periodic maintenance.

Also I doubt you’re working with comparable systems, most of ours was developed in house due to the budget constraints.

What is wrong with people?! Amazing. This is a FREE website. No I don’t work here, no I don’t anything for writing this. Just some common sense here. Amazing the info we can get for playing cash games from this site and not pay for it…

    Keep up the good work.

This site is so slow and has been for a very long time. I know you guys work hard but it’s really frustrating looking up other players and the data being wrong or taking 10 minutes. Not sure if there is any way to fix it or not. You still doo good work.

  9. Engin80 avatar Engin80 says:

OK. Just wanted to let you know…
But a brilliant front-end, I like the presentation layer very much!
BTW, your doubts and the fact that it’s FREE, LOL, are not the point. I hope you or someone is making money from this excellent free web-content. Remember the client, if you like him personally or not, should be handled carefully.

    regards, Engin80

Well we’re always working on improving the speed of the site, but theres a variety of things that people complain about as “slow” or “wrong” that are not the same.

    1) Traffic load causing slow page load times, this is a result of increased traffic to our website – and we’re waiting on hardware to arrive to fix this

    2) Incomplete data being displayed when searching a player – This is a result of us bringing down a database node for maintenance, and we’ve made the decision that going forward we’re going to simply bring down the entire site. It seems preferable to just display nothing rather than displaying partial data.

    3) Old data being displayed – This is typically a result of importing being offline for some period of time. We’ll turn off importing so new hands aren’t going into the database, but they are still being saved. Once we’re done with our maintenance we’ll turn importing back on – but it can take up to a full day to catch up with the backlog of hands that occurs.

We’re always working on these issues and most of the time we bring something offline it is because we’re trying to improve our users experience somehow, including speeding things up.

That said, there is a reason that nobody else has a database as large as ours. This is a difficult problem to tackle, and surely our users can understand that occasionally we have to work on things :) Even gmail has downtime ;)

They very much are the point, if we had unlimited funding of course we’d have two copies of the data. Heck I’d have 50 copies and have them be georedundant and then I’d put edge routing in place which directs you to the nearest geographical datacenter containing a copy of our data. Just thinking about that gets me excited.

As far as how we treat the users, I think that we’re respectful and polite with our users. We simply ask for the same, which we don’t feel is unreasonable.

Hey, it would be smart to put a “free donation” button on the site ;-)

    Keep it up! great stuff

I have nothing but good things to say about this site, and I have recommended it to all my friends who play cash games. They all love it too.

Thanks for all the hard work! It is appreciated!

I would atleast consider to buy a “premium user” account if
it would speed up things. I dont know if this is even possible,
    but im just saying.

Keep up the great work! :)

    Hi.

I wanted to say something about the server thing.

I am working here in germany for a great US Computer Company.
I build everyday rack`s, servers of all kind everything you can imagin and thorugh my hands sometimes 200 discs pass my hands(per day).

If you need storage server systems or only parts for it, I could ask for you directly in the company how much it costs and what we have.
I am not sure but maybe they can give you a good offer.

You can write me a message.

  22. Jbear416 avatar Jbear416 says:

    Hey Dameon,

I think you should strongly consider charging for the information here. Many regular poker players would happily pay a monthly premium for better service/performance/accurate results etc, myself included. The information is very valuable, and thus most regular poker players would see the value and pay for this information.

    Cheers

  23. Engin80 avatar Engin80 says:

4G hands, 30T data, that’s quite logical, you have these prepared analysis – you cannot do that just in time – yeah, still quite expansive, I was surprised, a not overdimensioned SAN is still about $50k+.
“50 copies and have them be georedundant and then I’d put edge routing in place which directs you to the nearest geographical datacenter containing a copy of our data” – hrgg.
    ;-)

Considering this is a free site and to many people provides VERY valuable information any negatives comments are plain retarded

  25. boonkauc avatar boonkauc says:

I am glad that the site is free and although it’s maybe not the fastest site on the web, it’s definitely the best for this purpose and once again, it’s FREE. Sure, they could charge for premium accounts or additional searches, but I think it might decrease the value of the site for those of us who have normal jobs and just enjoy tracking our own and maybe a few other people’s stats.

  26. modesz avatar modesz says:

so is partial results gonna be shown anytime soon last few days been tracking only some of hands?

  27. dameon avatar dameon says:

@modesz: I don’t really know what you’re saying. You’re going to have to be more specific.

  28. modesz avatar modesz says:

last few days i had couple session where pokertableratings didn’t tracks some of tables i was playing at. just wondering if it was gonna be shown.

  29. dameon avatar dameon says:

When I say partial data I mean the situation in which you had say 100 hands listed on your PTR page, but one day you check and only have 75 hands shown.

Hands that are missed, as in never shown, will never appear. Which site are you paying on?

    Dameon

this is a great site, and those who don’t have to pay for your services should not consider themselves clients but should be thankful for what you provide for the price you provided it. thanks ptr

why dont some of these ppl %*&#ing and moaning just donate some $$$ to the cause?!

    or.. STFU!

(and i paid myself to write this)

Hi awesome idea for a site, but my results are entirely off. PTR shows my profits as +260$ when im +897$, this is just between 1 and 8 of december. Is there something wrong with the tracking just right now or always? Wondering as im new to this site.
