I think I’m a better driver than average. 93% of people think they’re a better driver than average too. Statistically, 50% of people are above average and 50% are below average. I guess most of us are pretty delusional when it comes to our driving ability.
The tendency for people to overrate their skills is called illusory superiority. It happens in all kinds of situations –including the self-assessment of intelligence, memory, job performance, popularity, happiness and poker skill.
Incompetent players overestimate their skill and fail to recognize the skill of other players. Ironically, good players tend to underrate their skill. As Bertrand Russell put it, “the trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.”
Illusory superiority is also one of the main reasons fish continue to play despite losing a significant amount of money. They’ve deluded themselves into thinking they’re good and just rationalize away their losses. They blame bad luck, the government, rigged poker rooms, etc.
It’s important to remember that we were all fish when we started playing poker – we were all below average. The players that recognized their weaknesses and worked hard at correcting them tended to rise to the top. If you’re susceptible to tilt, learn how to correct it. If you lose money in 3bet pots, learn how to correct it. If you can’t put a player on a hand, learn how to correct it. Understanding and working on your weaknesses is what will make you a great poker player. You can only correct something when you know it’s a problem.

The people nitpicking this article are just demonstrating how true it actually is, I’m sure everybody knows how basic math works, stop pretending to be smarter than everyone else.
I wouldn’t take anything Gugel has to say toooooo seriously.
well…people knows how basic math works, but complex? Poker its not just maths…lots of X on diferent situations. btw, real poker its not on line poker =) and real % its not on line =)
The average IQ of people posting on this site is below average.
Great article btw. “the trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.” I love it.

DUDE this article is about people like u!! so lol
‘Statistically, 50% of people are above average and 50% are below average.’ Buddy, you failed in statistic…
Don’t encourage the fish to get better please.
He assumes standard normal distribution, where average(mean) and median are the same meaning that 50% will be over and 50% will be under the average. So “Buddy”, I guess you failed in statistics.
this is also called the Dunning–Kruger effect, there is a big wiki article on it as well as all the cognitive biases very useful stuff
It is interesting that you picked driving a car to compare to poker. In poker it is generally clear cut who is above average and below average, judging by results over time. (I understand that as time goes on a player can change/get better or worse, thrusting their results way out the window, but we’ll use results as a marker)
Driving has a completely different scale of measurement. The Dunning-Kruger effect is intriguing, however it is possible that 93% of people claim to be a better driver than others because a vast majority of people see being a good driver as different things.
My personal opinion: I drive faster than most people and tend to weave in and out of traffic more frequently than other people, however I am much more alert and maintain better control of my car than “the average driver.” I can also flawlessly drive a manual transmission, something that very few people under the age of 35 (in america) are capable of doing, if they had ever even tried.
Now Susie Joe sees me driving, as she maintains a steady 5 mph under the speed limit, and thinks to herself what a terrible driver. This type of person sees themselves as the best driver because they are “safe,” however in many instances being the slowest driver on the road could be the most dangerous.
Then there is Jasper, who thinks hes the best because he can send text messages while holding a conversation on the phone and eating a foot long sub. Well, we all know how most people feel about Jasper.
Then there are the all around drivers who follow the flow of traffic and don’t make many lane changes (perhaps the safest drivers). After breaking that down, I think its safe to say that between these mindsets you would come very close to 93% of the population believing they are a better driver, for different reasons. Who are the better-than-average drivers? I would say people like myself ( :-0 ) and people who follow the flow of traffic, but it would be interesting to hear what a professional on that topic would have to say.
Thanks Kole,
Good advice. Yeah I am going to try and be more patient overall, because patience is a big part of my game that I have to work on.
No limit seems like a fun game, like 99% of the poker I watch on television is no limit; however it is quite a transition from limit to no limit. I think all forms of poker have their pros and cons. My friend tried no limit and ran really bad, losing like 700 hundred bucks really quick with set over set and flopped two pair and got counterfitted on the river by a better two pair.
Omaha seems like a wild game, cause there are so many hand possibilities!
Yeah poker is a very complicated game! You can always learn something new everyday!
Please stop helping fish

PTR is seriously one of the main reasons online poker will dry up even more.. You guys are awesome.. for fuck sake.
You guys really believe that because of this post all of a sudden there will be no more donks at the tables? Like there weren’t dozens of books and thousands of posts written about how to get better in poker already.
i read this took it on board and im still a spewtard aggrodonk busting to any of you everyday
Lol DonKaMenTs
A lot of people are not willing to dedicate their time and energy to develop poker skills – it is possible to win hands by simple stupid, and fancy looking play (unlike in chess)- so fish always remain on the field.
great!
did no one else see the irony in this

I seem to be the only one to notice the flaw written by the author…
“93% of people think they’re a better driver than average too. Statistically, 50% of people are above average and 50% are below average. I guess most of us are pretty delusional when it comes to our driving ability.”
Actually, it is the minority that are delusional (93%-50%=43%). 43% is less than half and therefore a minority that are delusional.
And to all those wanting this be deleted/removed, there is no chance this article will dry up the supply of fish…
