Phil Ivey Swings Into Trouble, Then Back Out Again

By Paul Ellis - August 25th, 2010

Phil Ivey Poker is a game of swings, and the higher the stakes, the higher the swings. Phil Ivey had both good and bad sessions with a quick loss of $255,988.50 vs. deprimiert at the $2000/$4000 Heads-up FLH tables in just 106 hands. 10 of the hands included pots that went over the $30k mark, with all but one of them being shipped deprimiert’s direction. The largest pots of the session were at $39,999.50 which occurred 3 times, and within 7 minutes of each other.

In the first pot, deprimiert turns a pair of Queens with Kd-Qc in this hand and Ivey mucks his hand for a $20k loss for Ivey.

But Ivey would get some back in this hand when he chases his gut shot straight draw with Tc-8c and gets there on the river, resulting in the $20k uptick.

But a few hands later, deprimiert would come out victorious in this hand where he flops a pair of Jacks with Js-8h and it would hold against Phil Ivey ‘s mucked hand.

While the heads up session didn’t go Ivey’s way, he would get a majority of the losses back in a $179,186.00 positive swing playing just 115 hands of $300/$600 PLO. The session yielded two gigantic pots going Phil Ivey’s direction.

In the first large pot, Cole South flops top pair with a flush draw holding 5s-Ks-Tc-Jc. But Ivey comes along with a straight draw holding 8d-Kc-As-7h, and catches an Ace on the turn. That’s where the money gets in, and Ivey’s hand actually improves on the river when the Ace of clubs hits, sending the $134k pot his way in this hand.

In the second large pot, Ivey again wins a monster against Cole South as he rivers a set of Kings holding Th-7d-Kh-Kd to win the $182k pot in this hand.

South would end the session on a down swing, and has had a rough go of late. In his last 3 sessions, 2 of them have resulted in 6-figure losses, including the $183k loss in this PLO session, and a $121k net loss in 419 hands of $500/$1000 Heads-up CAP PLO.
