Relative unknowns dominated the $1/$2 NL leaderboard race with only 2 PokerStars players finishing in the top 5. Claudia18 earns her first UGL badge with a very strong January, winning $11,353 with a very impressive 5.07 BB/100 winrate, edging out out 2nd place finisher Trommelochse by just $120. Mayo the Don was the only really well established regular to crack the top5, taking 4th by grinding out a very impressive 110,557 hands for the month. He brought his lifetime winnings up to almost $48,000, sporting a very impressive graph over his 1.8M hands.
Ultimate $2/$4 NL Grinders
| Player | Site | Net | Hands | BB/100 |
| chiptheship | iPoker | $18,797 | 23,862 | 9.85 |
| gambling777 | Merge | $18,703 | 14,552 | 16.07 |
| pokerbern | PokerStars.it | $18,537 | 37,379 | 6.2 |
| Larry_D | Party Poker | $18,529 | 57,519 | 4.03 |
| unquitable | Party Poker | $18,480 | 56,051 | 4.12 |
Typically PokerStars grinders have dominated the midstakes UGL, but this month seems to mark a shift towards a more fragmented, competitive market as there was not a single PokerStars grinder in the top 5. Up-and-comer chiptheship earned his first UGL badge making $18,797 over just 23,862 hands for a likely unsustainable 9.85 BB/100 winrate. Two solid Party Poker regulars (Larry_D and Unquitable) rounded out the top5 earning $18,529 and $18,480 respectively. Unqultable boasts an extremely impressive 4.7 BB/100 winrate over his career 164,435 hands on Party. Seeing the emergence of Merge and iPoker players and the return of Party Poker players to the top of the UGL has to make one wonder how many of these players are well-established PokerStars or Full Tilt pros that have moved sites.
Ultimate $3/$6 NL Grinders
| Player | Site | Net | Hands | BB/100 |
| albuquerquefreakout | Merge | $20,858 | 20,174 | 8.62 |
| merkava1 | Merge | $19,345 | 13,287 | 12.13 |
| GAYDAR | Merge | $18,378 | 17,161 | 8.92 |
| Doommy | PokerStars | $14,000 | 2,070 | 56.36 |
| EVConsultant | Merge | $13,205 | 15,094 | 8.09 |
Merge players dominated the $3/$6 January UGL, taking 4 of the top 5 places. Quickly establishing himself as one of the best players on Merge, albuquerquefreakout earned his first UGL badge making over $1/hand ($20,858 over 20,174 hands). His monstrous January brought his lifetime Merge earnings up to almost $100,000, a pretty big milestone for any aspiring grinder. Only Stars player doommy prevented Merge from sweeping the UGL top 5, capturing 4th on the list with over $14,000 in profits in just ing $19,710 over just 2,071 hands. While I've seen players go through some pretty hot runs, I don't think I've ever witnessed a player earning so much profit in such a small hand sample at midstakes. Though his monthly winrate of 56.36 BB/100 is clearly not sustainable, it'll be interesting how he fares next month. Only time will tell if players from these smaller sites will continue to make up ground against their Stars counterparts.
